Last year we had an amazing time at the Wholehearted Summit. Over 4000 people attend. It was our first summit and we are incredibly excited to do it all over again this September 2022. For more details on how to join this year, keep reading!
I thought for today’s podcast episode I would give you the entire inside scoop from a special day we had during last year's summit.
At the 2022 Wholehearted Summit, we are going to get into some series and specific strategies to help you thrive at work and home. We will walk you through some deep dive topics and provide info about each enneagram type and how they can best utilize their strengths in their various leadership roles, whether that be at home as a parent or at church or business or ministry style settings.
BUT we also will have some lighthearted conversations, just like this one you are about to hear from last year with my good friend Keanu.
In today’s conversation with Keanu (who is an Enneagram 8), you’ll hear us chat about all things The Office. Yes, the widely popular and super awkward TV show! You’ll hear some audio clips from the show, though the original summit recording of this was in video format.
You’ll hear us talk about:
- Keanu’s past misconceptions about leadership
- Some comic relief on a serious topic of leading well, to make learning about the workplace more fun
- Audio clips from The Office that showcase, in exaggeration, each Enneagram type and an evaluation of each example
- Our typing of each Office character and the reasoning behind our choice of Enneagram for them
- Dissecting scenes from The Office through the lens of the Enneagram

Hi, I'm Amy Wicks, a Jesus and Enneagram enthusiast. As a wife, mama of three humans, and a fur baby, I get it. Juggling entrepreneurship in a family is challenging, but I believe the Lord does want your work to be enjoyable. As an Enneagram Type 7, I am all about the fun factor. And this podcast is here to help you put the joy back into working mom life. So you can see 1 Timothy 6.17 come to pass in your own unique path. It's a verse that says that God has given us all things to enjoy. And all? Well, friends, it means all. Motherhood, work from home life, or work out of the home life. With the Lord's help, there's truly a way to feel calm, balance, joy, clarity, and peace in any arena of life. Welcome to the Simply Fullhearted Podcast, where you can expect solo style and interview style episodes that are full of faith-based concepts, simple ideas, Enneagram insights, alongside practical tips to help you put that smile back on your face when it comes to doing life with Jesus. Now get your headphones and head to that big pile of dishes in the sink, or maybe that bathroom that needed cleaning two weeks ago. And let's get to learning together. I have such a fun conversation headed your way in just a few minutes. But before we dive in, I wanted to tell you about last year's wholehearted Enneagram summit. If you didn't know already, last year we had over 4,000 people attend virtually. It blew my mind. It was such a blessing to have so many people attend. And it was the first summit, so I'm excited because we get to do it again a second time this September of 2022. Now I have a few more details on how you can join us this year, especially if you missed it last year. And all of those details are in the show notes. And just a quick caveat: if you're listening to this podcast when it airs, the page to tell you about the summit is still a work in progress. So you're getting a sneak peek, but it'll be ready, I promise, in time for the official launch. But for now, you're my people. Go take a look at this year's summit and all the amazing speakers. Like Beth McCord, of course, said yes again, Beth and Jeff McCord, and Suzanne Stabile. It's gonna be so much fun. At this year's Wholehearted Enneagram Summit, I'm gonna get into specific strategies to help you thrive at work at home. I'm gonna walk you through deep dive topics and provide info for each Enneagram type and how you can best utilize your strengths in your various leadership roles, whether that be at home, as a parent, or at church or in a business, or even ministry style settings. But of course, like last year, we're gonna have some light-hearted conversations. And just like this one that you're about to hear from last year with my good friend Keanu. The summits I put on are a little bit like my Enneagram 7 self. It's more than okay to have a good heart-to-heart, but we also have big laughter. You're going to love it so much, especially if you enjoyed last year's. In today's conversation with Keanu, who is an Enneagram 8, you're gonna hear us chat about all things the office. Yes, the wildly popular and super awkward TV show. You're gonna hear some audio clips from the show throughout the original summit recording that was originally video format. So please note that there's sometimes some clips from multiple scenes being shown for each character that we're highlighting, which may not be as obvious when you're only hearing the audio rather than watching the scene change. You know what I mean? So just use your imagination for this. Now, a little bit about my guest today. Keanu is a certified Enneagram coach and certified expert ownership coach who uses his experience and qualifications to help business owners and leaders get to the next level with their teams without firing everyone and starting over or closing their businesses. Now that's a little bit about Keanu. Now, a little bit more about our episode today. Today you're gonna hear us talk about Keanu's past misconceptions about leadership. Also, comic relief on a serious topic of leading well to make learning about the workplace a little more fun. You're gonna hear audio clips from the office that showcase in an exaggerated format each Enneagram type and an evaluation of those examples. You're also gonna hear our typing of each office character and the reasoning behind our choice of Enneagram for them. Of course, if you disagree, you're gonna let me know. So just send me that message on Instagram. And we're gonna dissect some of the scenes from the office through the lens of the Enneagram. Now, without further ado, let's get this conversation going, shall we? I pray this easy-going conversation does put a smile on your face and it causes you sometimes maybe even to burst out laughing and earn some strange looks from those around you who don't have an earbud in their ear listening alongside you to all of this goodness. Now, of course, when they ask what's so funny, send them this podcast episode. Alrighty, here we go. Well, I have to tell our friends a little story about our meeting because here's the deal. Um, if our friends didn't know yet, I really struggled finding an Enneagram eight for this summit. I'll be totally honest. It was important to me, like so important because we got all the Enneagram types. And it was glaringly obvious that we had a gaping hole to not have an eight. So, in kindness, you stumbled upon it because you and I are part of the your Enneagram coaches network. That's where we were trained and where we have some community. But you kindly reached out to me and was like, I noticed you're missing an eight. I'd like to help you. So I think true to character, um, obviously that's what I love about AIDS, is like shoot them straight, willing to help. This is true about an eight, and also comes in and and kind of swoops in and fills the neat, which is so cool, right?
SPEAKER_12Yes. I'm glad that I was able to help. Absolutely.
SPEAKER_10Yes. Well, today we're gonna have a ton of fun talking about, well, let's call it leadership uh tips and tricks that you can learn from the office. And we're gonna laugh. You're gonna laugh as well. I can guarantee it. We're gonna illustrate truth with a little bit of acurdity and um one of our favorite shows here called The Office. And I hope all of you know what we're talking about, Shirley. Um but before we dive into all of that, I want you to get to know Keanu a little bit. So, Keanu, tell us about your family, your Enneagram journey, and how you're using it today.
SPEAKER_12Yes, well, as you mentioned, I'm an Enneagram type eight, and I have been all of eight. And when I realized what an eight was and what those shortcomings meant, I couldn't help but to dig into it. And but it came from a really felt need. I had been bulldozing a lot of people in my life in true eight fashion, including my wife and those around me. And I had just thought, because my background is in corrections, law enforcement, and military, and a little bit of time in financial services, all of those very aggressive and intense industries or careers. So I had just come to think that that's what leadership looked like. And I share the story, I say that leadership to me looked like running through walls and seeing who could make it through with me. And if they made it through with me, then they were good enough to be on my team. And I realized I was just missing out on a lot of potential in people. And so I started to realize that I was hearing some common themes about my personality, if you will, and who I was. And I happened upon the Enneagram around that time. I spent some time working with Elevation Church in Charlotte, North Carolina, and they had us take the Enneagram as we came in to join the team. And I had taken a ton of assessments in the past, but this one just struck me different because it wasn't just showing a snapshot of who I was, it was showing who I could be and who I was at my worst. And that's why I, as an eight, resisted personality assessments because I thought, all right, another picture, another box. And I actually had a speaking engagement yesterday, and a guy said, I came in here prepared to ignore everything you said and just eat and be entertained, and I didn't want to hear any of it. And by the end, he said, The reason I did that was because I've taken so many. He's worked in a lot of different corporate uh sales jobs. I've taken so many, they just put me in a box. And he said, What if I'm hungry? What if I'm tired? What if I'm angry? What if I'm really happy? What if I'm depressed? Like, what do I look like then? And so I speak to that very specifically when I talk about the Enneagram. And he was absolutely transformed. He wanted to take it back to his business. It was kind of a networking event. And so, anyways, I felt that. And I'm pretty sure he was an eight. So I began applying it. And my role with Elevation Church was developing leaders and volunteer leaders to lead volunteer teams. I began applying the Enneagram there in my marriage, in my relationships, in my family. And lo and behold, some of these volunteer leaders owned businesses. And they said, Hey, can you come and do this with our business and walk us through workshops or what have you? And I thought, yeah, sure, I guess. And they said, send me an invoice. And I said, No, I'll do it for free. But the truth was, I didn't know how to send an invoice because I wasn't raised to believe I could ever own a business. But that ended up transforming into my business now, true strategy. And we really focus with business owners, business leaders, entrepreneurs, and implementing the Enneagram in their businesses and to help their teams grow in understanding. And what we believe is when you accelerate relationships, you accelerate results because I'm still in eight. I still want the results, but I just believe that relationships are the best way to get there. So I started my business full-time June 2020 amidst the pandemic. And we're extremely blessed to be here. In that journey was, of course, YEC again, bringing us together, such an awesome, awesome team there with Jeff and Beth at the helm. And uh, so yeah, that's what I do with it now and applying it with businesses and leadership teams. So I'm excited to take a little twist, a more comical relief twist with The Office because it's my favorite show. And I typically work with some large corporations that may not be as open to letting me play the office. So I'm excited to be here with you today.
SPEAKER_10Oh, yeah, this was perfect because you know, for me as a seven, we got to add some fun and some celebration. It really is, I think, especially just want to throw this little tidbit about fun and celebration is that we uh we've been going through so much these this last year and a half, and almost it feels like, oh man, we're almost like another school year impacted by our national crisis, world crisis, and then all the events um in the world and all the different the pain and um all of that. And so it's hard sometimes, especially as believers, is it's like when does fun and celebration take place? How do we make space to engage in that? So it's something I've personally been exploring and something that I knew had to be a part of the summit because the Enneagram, obviously, it's for self-awareness, it's for empowering our relationships and thriving in our whole heart of life, but it's also it's just fun when we let it be.
SPEAKER_08This is true.
SPEAKER_10Yes. So I'm excited, like you mentioned, the office for me. When uh we were newlyweds, we had another couple who were maybe just a couple years ahead of us. Well, we would get together every, I want to say it was Thursday night back then. We would watch The Office and we would watch Lost. Eventually, that was like the next thing that we blew in there. We'd have dinner together. And then we were having babies and trying to do the same thing. Well, it didn't always work out very smoothly, like the baby would cry usually, but we tried. So anyway, the office has been such a fun memory in our in our um history of our marriage and and stuff like that. I know, Keanu, for you as well.
SPEAKER_12Yes, my wife, it's uh it's our favorite show. She was devastated. We were actually traveling from New Mexico where we're from, back to Charlotte on New Year's Day or New Year's Eve when the office was removed from Netflix. And we're driving across across the country. And my wife said, Well, we have to watch the office, we got to get it in while we can. So we're driving, watching the office. I mean, I'm driving, kind of watching, but we just had to, but now I'm I'm actually in the process of hunting down a Blu-ray player and the box set because it's gonna be an awesome gift, but I'm looking for that now.
SPEAKER_10I love it. That's great. Yeah. So uh I'm sure your wife would gladly buy you the box set for Christmas here. Absolutely a few months. Oh, that's great. Well, awesome. Well, if you want to really quick just give us the high view of what we're doing today, and then we're gonna dive right in. It's gonna be fun.
SPEAKER_12Yes, I can't wait to get into it. So, what we've done is we put together some clips that represent all nine types. And of course, these clips are operating somewhat in in hyperbole of all the nine types, the extremes total absurdity. Yes, and so what we're going to do is talk about what why we see that as that type and kind of have some fun with it, but also talk about the positive sides of that type and really give you maybe some examples for your workplace of who you might see working around you and their Enneagram types, but ultimately how we still all need each other and how we can better understand each other. And so, using examples like this, we're gonna dive into it and have some fun to see. One, the lesser sides of each type, but also the strengths they bring to the table.
SPEAKER_10All right, awesome. All right, QR up, let's jump right in.
SPEAKER_12Awesome.
SPEAKER_17Isn't 7 p.m. a little late for a lunch party?
SPEAKER_06Lunch party? It's supposed to say launch party. What is wrong with you?
SPEAKER_07Angela is worse than usual lately, and we have a party to throw. So I Googled how to deal with difficult people, and I got all of this. So we're gonna try out some new things today.
SPEAKER_06So, how do you feel about the fact that the banner says lunch? I feel angry. Angry at you. Angry at you for doing something stupid, angry at me for believing you could do something not stupid.
SPEAKER_07So sorry to hear that. That must be awful.
SPEAKER_06It is awful. You've made this day awful.
SPEAKER_00Maybe you could just change the U into an A.
SPEAKER_06Then it would say lunch party, Kevin. Would it really be better if it said lunch party? Oh, lunch party. It's supposed to say launch.
SPEAKER_02Okay, wow, easy booster. See, nobody cares about this party anyway.
SPEAKER_06I care! Plan a party, Angela. Oh, and the entire world will see it. Oh, and here's $65 for your budget. Oh, and here are four idiots who'll do nothing but weigh you down. Oh, and your cat's still dead. Oh my goodness.
SPEAKER_10I laughed the whole way through.
SPEAKER_12Why do you think Angela? These are in order, by the way, just to let the audience know. Why do you think Angela is a type one? What sticks out to you?
SPEAKER_10Well, I would go from obviously there's a hypercritical focus. There for a one, this is where not only do they have the inner critic, and the reason why they need to uh surrender and discern the inner critic's voice is that that inner critic sometimes comes flying out of their mouth. If they're not healthy, it can come out in super direct and harsh ways.
SPEAKER_08Yes.
SPEAKER_10But then also on the flip side that was highlighted here, they find the missing things, whether it's the missing letter in the word launch, not lunch, but they also know how to do a job right and well. Um, but then we see this on the flip side. It's really hard to delegate them because in most type ones' minds, the struggle is well, no one can do it as right as I can. And so why should I let go of control and let someone else do it, especially if they don't do it right?
SPEAKER_12Yes, that's a great catch seeing that on the delegation side of it, because you'll see Angela's character throughout the office. She has a hard time delegating or letting go of control. And being that hypercritical self, that's where we see type ones and eights mistype oftentimes, or especially externally. Some people say, Well, you you must be an eight or you must be a one. Uh they'll usually say they're an eight if they're angry and mean, but ones can be just as aggressive and that sense of control and wanting things to be right. But you know, in that she she was also a backbone throughout the whole plot of the office, bringing some structure because, of course, that environment was just wild. And, you know, we of course we're going to talk about Michael later on, but she brings that, and that's what ones will bring is that that sense of responsibility, uh, wanting to do it right, ensuring that it's right, and then also making sure that everyone else is kind of rowing in the same direction as well.
SPEAKER_10Yes, and that's so good. I think the thing that I've always wanted to whisper to her is that you're good enough. And I I think you can even see that oozing out a little bit of wanting to hear that from her people, that either her work was good enough, that she was good enough. And it's almost like um, because that was so missing, she failed to be able to give that to others. So this is where for the ones to do the work and to receive that message of grace, where and they can learn to discern what's the inner critic and what's actually the voice of God, so they can receive that message of grace and mercy. Then that need to fix it isn't gone, but it can come out in a kinder, gentler way.
SPEAKER_12That's such a great point. And it reminded me that Angela was a Christian and she references her faith often. And so, of course, she had guiding morals and principles, but she was so a little bit rigid in her approach that it didn't really open people up to hear the ball very well.
SPEAKER_08Exactly.
SPEAKER_12And so just imagine if she would have opened herself up a little bit, not that I think she's gonna evangelize on the office, but let's think about our workplace, right? If we're so set to the rules and then we don't really open up for the relationship. That was a good point.
SPEAKER_10Yeah, yeah. No, that's so good. I love these. You gotta wonder, as um, I've thought through all of this, I'm like, did the office writers know about the Enneagram? Because they they did a really darn good job.
SPEAKER_12I would be curious to find out one day, one of us on our podcast or through our relationships, and we're gonna get there and find out.
SPEAKER_10That's right. I love it. Let's do it.
SPEAKER_12Well, speaking of some of the writers of the office, let's let's figure out who's representing our type two then.
SPEAKER_01Oh, it's so good. Well, I manage my department, and I've been doing that for several years now. And God, I've learned a lot of life lessons along the way.
SPEAKER_04Your department's just you, right?
SPEAKER_01Yes, Jim, but I am not easy to manage. Tell me that you care about me. That is what I want.
SPEAKER_14Kelly, I'm your boss now, okay? You can't keep talking to me like I'm your boyfriend.
SPEAKER_01It is a great idea. Ultimatums are key. Basically, nobody does anything for me anymore unless I threaten to kill myself. Red, what are you doing? I could be pregnant. Okay, no. Oh, my resolution was to get more attention.
SPEAKER_14Nope, she's lying.
SPEAKER_16But you need to access your uncrazy side. Otherwise, maybe this thing is one of its course.
SPEAKER_01I lied. Whatever, just fire me. But you know what? I did it because you guys didn't come to my party and you said you would try to, and then you didn't even show up. Kelly.
SPEAKER_12Did you know Mindy Kaling was a writer for The Office?
SPEAKER_10I didn't. I actually, when you said that, all of a sudden I was like, I remember now, but I didn't even think about it before.
SPEAKER_12I didn't know that. My wife is a type nine, and she podcasts, but it's not like my podcast. My podcasts are all super aggressive business growth, leadership, development. Hers are like horror stories and The Office because Pam and Angela actually co-host a podcast where they walk through each of the episodes. And I had no idea that Mindy Kaling was a writer. So that was a pleasant surprise, especially because of how she's portrayed in her show, essentially.
SPEAKER_10Yes, yes. I didn't realize that either. I mean, she it is so well written, and it's kind of fun to think about that she had influence on that because now, you know, like we said, we're using absurdity and humor to illustrate some extremes. But this is um a type two gone a little needy and manipulative. So clearly the need for love and affection and attention and a desire to be wanted, she doesn't really go about it in a good way. Um, but you mentioned, and I'll let you expand on this, um, but who didn't love her?
SPEAKER_12That's right. Yeah, she was connected to everybody. And as I was looking through that, I was finding these clips because she so accurately represents a type two, but I didn't want to put those out there being so negative for our type twos that are out there to feel, wow, that was kind of rough. Uh, but she was, she was loved by everyone, she was connected to everyone, she had a relationship with everyone. And if you even look through the clips, I noticed this as we were watching through again. In each of the clips, she was with different people. So she was always connected to the party. And even the last one, which was my favorite example, Jim and Dwight don't go to her birthday party. So then she makes some fake reviews from clients to withhold their bonuses. And but you think about that, she was throwing a party for everybody. She invited them. Uh, if you if you watch The Office, she made mugs for every person with their face on it. It's like such a type two thing that hey, I I love you and I want to care for you and provide for you. And on the other side of it, there we all have these characters, I'm sure, that we see in shows that we say, that's what I really wish I could be like. For example, mine. Is uh Ron Swanson from Parks and Rec. Have you ever seen Parks and Rec?
SPEAKER_10Oh my goodness.
SPEAKER_12He is so direct and so aggressive and intense. And every time I watch it, my wife will just look over at me like, that's what you really want to say, isn't it? I said, Yes, 10 times out of 10. So we all kind of have that person we want to release on the world. And I think that some of these will show examples, like Mindy or uh Kelly in the office of type twos of like, that's how I really want to be, but but I'm ashamed to say I have needs. And that's that other side of the type twos. If you if you aren't a type two and you know type twos, they have needs too. And they'll be ashamed to admit it. So be proactive in caring for them as much as they care for us. Be proactive in checking on them because they won't naturally share that they have needs until it gets to a point of unhealth.
SPEAKER_10Yeah, that's right. And they they will be. Those are the people you need on your team who are like kind of your your like your wingman, if you will, your wing woman too to kind of come along. And especially if you're a strong leader who's not a two, you need that person to help you remind you about not to, you know, uh steamroll over them or just keep blowing through walls to take time and and do the thoughtful things. The thoughtful thing that for a two comes supernaturally, um, and that can come about in a way that's not manipulative. It's just the way they love their people. So we love you twos. Yes, type twos.
SPEAKER_12I'm an eight with which again, two is a big part of my personality. Yes, so I really feel for that because that surfaces in me, especially in my blind spot path. I really crave appreciation, but the eight side says, Well, you can't say that you need that. So I'm intentional now. I have a scale with my team, it's a one through four scale that we can check on each other and just give some language. And part of that is saying, hey, I need some appreciation. So I feel it, type twos, love you, type twos. Let's figure out who our type three representative is.
SPEAKER_14Yes. People keep calling me a wonder kind. I don't even know what that means. I I mean, I know what it means. It means very successful for your age. So I guess it makes sense, but it's a weird word. Yeah, I created a website. Look, at the end of the day, apples to apples flying at 30,000 feet. This is a paper company. And I don't want us to get lost in the weeds or into a beauty contest. I told you I don't want you doing these things in here. You can use your own office or do it in the hall.
unknownHey!
SPEAKER_05It's the temp! Look! Oh my gosh.
SPEAKER_09Is that the police?
SPEAKER_11Yes. Well, this is what happened. Uh, Ryan's big project was the website, which wasn't doing so well. So, Ryan, to give the impression of sales, recorded them twice. Once as office sales and once as website sales, which is what we refer to in the business as misleading the shareholders. Another good term is fraud.
SPEAKER_14Want to apologize for how I treated you last year. I lost sight of myself, and now that I've quit the rat race, I realize there's so much more to life than being the youngest VP in the company's history.
SPEAKER_10Oh my goodness, that is just so good.
SPEAKER_12I I lost myself and realized there's more to life than being the youngest VP in company history. It's such a Ryan's progression of his story was probably the most complete uh of any of the types that we're going to talk about today.
SPEAKER_10Yep, yep. I love how you framed all of that. And it was kind of like like his metamorphosis of his journey of essentially starting and um his big ambition. Again, it's one of those is like it's a perfect typecast for a three. Like you couldn't uh that on the inside, I think is really what is going on again. The kind of what you wish you could say, or what you do sometimes hear people say, or what you can see as driving them and motivating to be the best, to be the youngest, you know, best salesman ever. And um, and then all of those, you know, just those pieces too, the temptation to deceive, or in Ryan's case, commit fraud. That's extreme, but um, but it is a temptation to try to get ahead. But yeah, threes, tell you what, you're getting stuff done. You were doing things, you're making big changes.
SPEAKER_12Yeah. Type threes are absolutely essential in all of our businesses. We actually just added a three to our team because we needed some empathy, and not that we added him because he's a three, it's just a great benefit because my team consists of three eights, a seven, and now a three. So we were very, very one-sided, and we needed that because threes really do have a natural gift of empathy as well. Because even though they become what their environment wants them to be, that starts with understanding your environment. So they still have that natural first step of empathy. And so I liked Ryan that represented this because in the show, you don't really get to see a lot of Ryan. And I think that he had a really great, he had great character underneath all of it, but it was always trying to figure out what mask he needed to put on. And so I'd like to encourage Threes to say, you know, you are not just your accomplishments, you're so much more than your accomplishments. And people want to get to know what's going on underneath outside of what you feel they see as valuable. You are valuable regardless.
SPEAKER_10Yes, yes. I think, I think they do uh that well, not only obviously some of those clips that you highlight, but I think of some of his character and his um his emotional connection that he has, he does have people um throughout the seasons that is a kind of an element, is a is a telling part. I am a raising um a an Enneagram three boy. And so just that that element that makes sure that drivenness, but the emotional component is is just so unique to that type, something I really value and is a strong contributor to any sort of team where there's that vision and it's not just passion, but the emotions, not only involved with everybody in the room, but the people that they're serving as well.
SPEAKER_12That's right. That's right. And type threes, uh like the fact that the fraud thing happened there and the dominant struggle for a type three being deceit, it was amazing because if you think about his story, what if he didn't do that? I mean, he still had the job, he still had the opportunity to turn it around, but it was saying, Well, no, I gotta put on this this mask or this cover to make it look more successful. And what I like to tell type threes, the only person that really thinks you're a fraud is you. People don't think that people think so much of you, you don't have to put yourself in that place. And even that last statement, it shows the transformation, but he still mentions I was the youngest VP in company's history. So he's still trying to hold on to this identity. Yes, like, but I still was, and it's like, hey, you don't have to do that, you can move forward. Who do you think R type four is? You you you watched already, but did you have any spoiler alert?
SPEAKER_10I, you know, that was so funny because that was the first character that I was thinking in my mind, like, where did he fit in the Enneagram? And it took me, it took me a minute, it took me a few. But lo and behold, spoiler, should I spoil it?
SPEAKER_12Well, let's just throw it to it. Let's see what's anything.
SPEAKER_10Let's go.
SPEAKER_14Let's talk about it.
SPEAKER_10Sounds good.
SPEAKER_14Okay, Michael, why don't you start us off?
SPEAKER_02Um that wasn't much of an introduction. Ladies and gentlemen, your boss, Michael Scott. I'm still lame.
SPEAKER_03Okay. Would I rather be feared or loved? Um, easy, both. I want people to be afraid of how much they love me.
SPEAKER_02There's this woman I met a few weeks ago. Her name is Donna, manager of the Sid and Dexters. And right now, we're in the midst of a passionate love affair. Um, no. But she is coming by today, maybe to buy some printers. So Me Walking Phyllis down the aisle was supposed to be the highlight of the wedding. And now the wedding has no highlight. Well, I got news for you, Albert. That's your real name. Show's not over. Oh, Michael.
SPEAKER_10Oh man, Michael has deep need for significance, for meaning, the emotions that play out over season after season. I mean, Enneagram 4 all the way.
SPEAKER_12And some people I've seen people classify him as a three, as a seven. And externally, I think that you could see that being possible. But when you look at, like you said, deep uh longing for significance and and emotional connection, he romanticizes everything. That's why I added that clip there of, you know, we're very involved. No, we're not, but she's coming to buy printers or paper, you know. So there's this romanticizing of everything. And everything. He even Ryan's my my best friend, and you know, this and that Jim and uh Jim and Pam. Uh, I'm like a godfather to their children and Phyllis. I should walk her down the aisle. There's this longing to to be completed by everyone around them.
SPEAKER_10Yeah, and to fill a unique role in everyone's life. I and and also authenticity and vulnerability, yeah. He he's nailed it, even though completely inappropriate, and he gets himself in trouble. He self-sabotages all the time. Like it's, you know, you gotta love him. And you're right, I think because of the humor, people might think the seven, and because of he has some ambitious qualities, but his ambition is more to fill that unique role, not just in the company, but in the people that he's with the people that he's working alongside of and to to have that. And um yes, yeah, I mean, just again, but we need our force. I I think it's great to finally have a very clear male role model to example that for because I think force especially the romantic individualist, it gets pegged in as a as a female, oftentimes it's highlighted in in in elements like this. So um the fact that Michael could kind of be a mascot for the male four, yes, um, even though illustrated by absurdity, I think it's a good win.
SPEAKER_12And and as a leader, because I think a lot of fours shy away from leadership or they don't allow themselves to step into leadership because they feel like they don't have what it takes, right? Something's missing. And so to be able to kind of show some opposite sides of the four as a male and as a leader to show, hey, no, you can do that, right? You have what it takes. If you stop focusing on what you're lacking or your perceived lack and focus on what you have, you have something no one else can bring to the table. And that's what I wanted to highlight about Michael, a positive side. There's a very specific instinctual subtype of a four-wing three or of a four that looks a lot like a three, very, very driven, and they'll mistype as a three or as an eight sometimes. And so, in seeing that and showing that, hey, he was still the leader, he was still very driven. And when the situation needed it, he rose to the challenge to be that leader and he maintained it all throughout, right? And so being able to see that, and then of course, you think about how Michael exited the office, not Steve Correll, but Michael. For a relationship, he was finally whole, he was finally complete with Holly. So yes, great, great respect to Michael Scott's and our take on him as a four.
SPEAKER_10Oh, yes. Oh my goodness, some of the best, uh, best lines from him for sure of all time. Uh absolutely.
SPEAKER_12Well, let's move on to type five.
SPEAKER_10Yes.
SPEAKER_00Yes, I have a dream, and it's not some MLK dream for equality. I want to own a decommissioned lighthouse, and I want to live at the top, and nobody knows I live there. And there's a button that I can press and launch that lighthouse into space. I have been trying to get on jury duty every single year since I was 18 years old. To get to go sit in an air-conditioned room downtown judging people while my lunch is paid for. That is the life.
SPEAKER_12Why is Stanley a type five to you?
SPEAKER_10That whole thing on the about the jury, like, come on, that is just so funny. But I, you know, I think these clips illustrate it, but also as I thought about Stanley's character and his role, he he was the investigator. He was challenging in a five-way, Michael, obviously, all the time, mostly behind his back. But it was like he was challenging again, those who like assert their way through personality. Fives kind of dial back and go, hey, you can't just do this because you have a powerful personality. You need to know what you're doing and you need to have this information. So um uh fives often get pegged at this as this bookwormish, like knowledgeable head in their book. But I feel this Stanley is like a great illustration of just like, hey, he's gonna challenge the the the given, the expectations, and try to pull people back to like what's true here.
SPEAKER_12That's right. And if it has especially as it pertains to their energy. So there were a couple of clips I wanted to add of Stanley, like you said, becoming very snappy uh with Ryan, a lot with Michael. There's one point where he just goes off on Michael and says, Everything you would do, I do the opposite. And it and it again gives a little bit more insight to why Michael's probably a four, because being very emotionally driven versus logically driven, of course, a five would do the exact opposite. But again, fives take on those characteristics of the type eight. And there's one point where Stanley steps in to uh really want to step into leadership, and he doesn't go very long, but he comes alive and he awakens to it. And so when it comes to his energy and his resources, he comes alive into that eight nature, or even when they go to Florida at one point, he says, Vacation Stanley is different. And I think of some of those other more fun characteristics of five as well. Yes, taking on the seven, but you know, at his core, he was consistent, he did his job, he mined his three feet of space. And if you if you let him alone, I mean, he was one of the most consistent characters as far as staying put and just doing his job. True, which again, fives bring that that sense of dependability and and reliability to a team.
SPEAKER_10Yep. Oh, I love it. So many good things we can say about our fives, but I'm really excited about this next one. I laughed my whole way through.
SPEAKER_12Well, this one I think is gonna shock some people because just like we're changing some paradigms on some types, I think we're changing some paradigms on some characters. So let's introduce our type six.
SPEAKER_10Yep, it's good.
SPEAKER_05Would I ever leave this company? Look, I'm all about loyalty. In fact, I feel like part of what I'm getting paid for here is my loyalty. But if there were somewhere else that valued that loyalty more highly, I'm going wherever they value loyalty the most. Security in this office park is a joke. Last year I came to work with my spud gun in a duffel bag. I sat at my desk all day with a rifle that shoots potatoes at sixty pounds per square inch. Can you imagine if I was deranged?
SPEAKER_02Save the receipts.
SPEAKER_05I keep various weaponry strategically placed around the office. I saved Jim's life with a can of pepper spray. I had Velcrode under my desk. People say, Oh, it's dangerous to keep weapons in the home or the workplace. Well, I say, it's better to be hurt by someone you know accidentally than by a stranger on purpose. They will cost you your life. Elaborate. The worst thing you can do for your immune system is to coddle it. They need to fight their own battles. If Saber really cared about our well-being, they would set up hand desanitizing stations. Whenever I'm about to do something, I think, would an idiot do that? And if they would, I do not do that thing. Yes, I have a wig for every single person in the office. You never know when you're gonna need to bear a passing resemblance to someone.
SPEAKER_12Amy, what is a counterphobic six?
SPEAKER_10Yeah, exactly. Dwight from the office. Clearly, I mean, these are some of the best clips because I think people would maybe think a five or an eight, maybe right off the bat. But if you really explore it, I'd give you a six-wing five, maybe. Um, but then you throw in the mask thing and you got a little seven-wing in them too. But clearly the knives, the weapons, I mean, the blow dart thing and the toilet, come on. I six is always prepared.
SPEAKER_12Well, as I was looking into it, I really did challenge myself to look for these clips. I didn't have much preconceived notion on who was what. And as I was looking into it and I was looking at these clips, I thought, you know what, Dwight really does represent a counterphobic six. And in the same way that I wanted to shed a little bit of light on that type four that is a male and is in leadership, the same thing with the counterphobic six, many may not be aware, and they'll run around living like type eights. One of our friends and mentors, Jeff McCord, lived a long time believing he was an eight because he didn't want to embrace that he was a counterphobic six. And so bringing some light to that, Dwight, and in caring about loyalty and always being prepared in just his constant way of thinking, even that you never know, and you'll have to bear a passing resemblance to somebody. And just the way that he carried himself, you really do see that he ran towards his fears, always towards his fears. It wasn't as much like an eight. Some people say Dwight's an eight. He didn't really care about leadership, he feared being led by people that weren't as good as him. Trustworthy, trustworthy people, yes.
SPEAKER_10So yeah, totally. Yeah, I think again and again, and that's where he did challenge oftentimes, Michael, and kind of I think even went back and forth. But this is where I see a lot of sixes and coaching sixes, that is a hard tug of war for them. Can I trust this leader? And going back and forth, especially if their leader ends up being human, missteps and breaks that trust, that is hard won and hard fought for. And so that I think that's a really key element because as a leader who maybe is leading sixes, or if you're a six who is a leader, uh, that that trust element is a really critical uh piece that you have to take time to develop and and then hold dear and treasure and really honor what either that you are establishing with other people or that you're looking to to gain and acquire from those that you're leading. Um, but I I think I think this one is just like it's spot on. It's it's just too perfect, especially when you start looking at these clips. Good job, Dwight.
SPEAKER_12Empower to Dwight. He was a reliable foot soldier. I mean, wherever, again, that loyalty, that support, that wanting support, but also always providing support. Yes, Dwight is uh this was an awesome one tip portray. Uh, type sevens. This one's gonna be a little bit controversial, but we'll talk about it.
SPEAKER_10And I think for the seven, you use two people. Do I have that right?
SPEAKER_12Yes, because I wanted to show a couple of characteristics and also I just like I said, I wasn't entirely sure, but we'll unpack it.
SPEAKER_04I'm just saying that you can't be sure that it wasn't you. That's ridiculous. Of course it wasn't me. Marijuana is a memory loss drug, so maybe you just don't remember. I would remember. Well, how could you if it just erased your memory? That's not how it works. Now, how do you know how it works? Seriously? You're gonna send me back?
SPEAKER_05Uh, yeah. That's the safest part of a car. In the event of a crash, driver always protects his side first.
SPEAKER_04What is your name, sir? I am Bill Butlicker. Really? That's your real name? How dare you! My family built this country, by the way. Be respectful, Dwight, please. Uh yes, Michael. Could you hold on one second? That's my other line. What? No, but I Hello? Yeah. No, I'm just on the phone with this stupid salesman. He's so dumb. Probably just gonna keep him on the line forever and not buy anything. Okay.
SPEAKER_05It's up to you to change his mind.
SPEAKER_04Sorry. That was a family emergency.
SPEAKER_05Oh no, what's wrong? You know what? That's private.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_16Bring it home now. And don't forget the new black man phrase I taught you.
SPEAKER_15Pippity poppy, give me the zappage. Yes, sir. Remember that. I'll be right outside if you need me. All right.
SPEAKER_16Yeah. Tell Mike some new phrases. I want him to get the raise. Just can't help myself. That's a fact of it.
SPEAKER_12All right. Jim and Darren.
SPEAKER_10These are great.
SPEAKER_12So with Jim, a lot of people think Jim was a type nine. And there are some points where I would think so as well. But what I really see in Jim is that he is always very external and energetic and much more of a life of a party, even when he doesn't mean to be. When Jim shows up, the room just gets a lift.
SPEAKER_09Yeah.
SPEAKER_12And so you kind of see that in him. And then I included Daryl in there as well, which made a lot of sense. And in context, later on in the seasons, they go to do a to to launch a startup in Philadelphia.
SPEAKER_08Yes.
SPEAKER_12Because they wanted more. They wanted something else. They wanted to get the most out of their life, right? Yeah. And so you really kind of see that come to life with them. And then to introduce Daryl as well to kind of show a lot of those characteristics of the seven of being very energetic and just fun loving and carefree.
SPEAKER_10I think too what you have here is a good contrast of some subtypes, but also Jim is a seven winged six and Daryl is a seven winged eight. Um, because Jim, you have a little bit more. Of the study loyalty, not as energetic as the seven-winged eight is. Um, and I you know, I think I can speak to this because as a seven, I'm a seven-wing eight, but I have a daughter who's a seven-winged six, and there is more of that drive for um maybe harmony um is a more of a an accurate word as opposed to the nine who just wants peace, because we have a nine in our house as well. And so there's a different motivator there, but they sometimes can be seen doing the same thing, um, that or something that looks a little bit similar, but there's the levity, like you said, there's just some energy that's brought into the room that Jim provides. And then with Daryl, you have the more assertive and the more aggressive, and you have, you know, obviously some mean jokes in there. But I I love it. I think it was really perfect. I um again, it was Jim is probably the next character that I was like, oh, is he this? Is he that? But I think you picked some spot on clips.
SPEAKER_12Well, you're a type seven enthusiast. What's your official seal? Are we calling Jim a seven?
SPEAKER_10I think it's safe to call him a seven. I'm gonna go there. Okay.
SPEAKER_12I'm glad I was most excited to get your perspective there. Uh well, I'll speak a little bit to the type eight next then.
SPEAKER_10Perfect.
SPEAKER_17You see, I sit across from a man. I see his face, I see his eyes. Now, does it matter if he wants a hundred dollars of paper or a hundred million dollars of deep-sea drilling equipment? Don't be a fool. He wants respect. He wants love. He wants to be younger, he wants to be attractive. There is no such thing as a product.
SPEAKER_04Okay, I I um I'm almost a little concerned that you might be overqualified for the position. Do you um do you think that you are?
SPEAKER_17Do I look like someone who would waste my own time?
SPEAKER_04No, a man of great confidence. Could you speak a little more to that? And what the role of confidence would be in a dialogue with a support.
SPEAKER_17Will you be heard? Will you have a voice? Will I steamroll over you? Do you feel heard right now, Jim? You have a voice right now. You can answer me. Yeah. That was your choice, not mine. The fallacy is that it is up to the steamroller. It is up to the object whether it will be flattened or not. And I can tell just from the small interaction we've had already, you won't be flattened by anybody. Do you agree with me, Jim?
SPEAKER_08Yes.
SPEAKER_17Yes, you do.
SPEAKER_12Robert California, I don't think that he's given enough attention as a character on The Office because it was such a short time. But I'll let you, because self-awareness does not start with self, it starts with others. I'll let you assess why or why not Robert California is a type eight challenger.
SPEAKER_10Oh man, I'll tell you what. Well, he's challenging at all the norms. And yet at the same time, it's kind of what we talked about before in your personality. It's this like it comes from a desire to help. Ultimately, the passion and the drive is there because they want to make change. They they are passionate. You know, that's the thing about the eight, it's like the extreme. You love it or you hate it. And so that's where it's, you know, learning that balance of like to do something well, I don't have to a hundred percent wholeheartedly love it. I I just have to not hate it. And like finding that middle. But I think here it illustrates that like he's trying to help, but he's also challenging. And you see the energy, that energy piece of everyone else in the room slightly being intimidated and ready to be, you know, just bulldozed over and kind of stepping back a little bit as he takes in. That was a good one for sure.
SPEAKER_12Yes, very I think that he's a different subtype, maybe more like a self-preservation type eight challenger. And I'm a social type eight, so I look definitely a lot different. I look more probably like a seven. Uh, but seeing that in him, I wanted to just show that eights aren't always just very loud and intense and aggressive, but you see kind of the subtle tones of a type eight in Robert California, because he's, like you said, very intense and intimidating and demanding without even meaning to be. But I think he in this character knows it and leverages it. So he asks Jim, you know, do you feel heard right now, Jim? And Jim's like, Yeah, yes, right.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_12And later on, he gets the job to lead this office, and then he goes and convinces the CEO of the company to resign, and he takes over as the CEO. So you just see again this this this big intense drive, but at the same time, he's he's doing it to serve ultimately, even though, and then he, I think in the office he's divorced probably five or six times, something like that. So, always this desire for more and more and more. Uh, so just kind of seeing some of those sides. So, I think type eights, as a type eight, I want to challenge you. Hey, ask people how intense or demanding or aggressive am I? We all need someone, this goes for all of us as leaders, that will tell us what we do not yet need to hear. We do not want to hear it, but we need to hear it, and especially as type eights, because even when you say, Hey, tell me what I don't need to hear, they're gonna say, Oh no, you're fine. No, really, please. I this is a gift to me because we'll still be afraid. And I have to remind myself all the time, especially when I'm speaking, I didn't realize that I would start to get very intense and I look angry already. I remind myself to smile because I am happy, I am excited. But that was a big tension, as I mentioned earlier, and in figuring out what the type eight or leaning into it is my wife would say, You're angry, you're angry, you're angry. And I was never really angry. So, yes, I think Robert California represents a little bit different side of the type eight, and it gets to give some reflection because I think some type eights might be thinking, Do I look like that? Uh, but again, type eights love to connect with you. Glad that you're here. And thank you, Amy, for letting a type eight on the show.
SPEAKER_10Absolutely, absolutely. I'm so glad. So glad you said yes. This is great. Now, last but not least, another very favorite character, which I think to me, she just fits this perfectly. So let's I agree. Let's share.
SPEAKER_09I hate the idea that someone out there hates me. I even hate thinking that Al Qaeda hates me. I think if they got to know me, they wouldn't hate me. But Karen knows me and she still hates me, so.
SPEAKER_13Hi.
SPEAKER_09Good morning. Can I help you?
SPEAKER_13Yes, I'm from Techstar, about a new phone system for you. I was wondering if I could talk to Michael Scott.
SPEAKER_09I'm sorry, he's not in right now.
SPEAKER_13Really? He's never around when I come by.
SPEAKER_09Shoot. They have new phone systems now that can ring directly to a salesman, or someone presses star and they go to accounting. Basically, 95% of my job. But I'd like to see a machine that puts out candy for everyone.
SPEAKER_07Vending machine.
SPEAKER_09This was tough. I suggested we flip a coin, but Angela said she doesn't like to gamble. Of course, by saying that she was gambling that I wouldn't smack her.
SPEAKER_10Oh, don't we love Pam? Yes.
SPEAKER_12Love Type Nine. You said you had a type 9 in your household. Who might that be?
SPEAKER_10That's my husband. I am married to a type 9. And the thing that sticks out the most that I think here illustrates it is for her presence to matter. She didn't want an automated phone system put in because then, like, what can she contribute and what she can do? I mean, can it give candy out? So, you know, you just could count on Pam to bring in just a gentleness and a serenity to the atmosphere, loyalty as well. Um, and then also nines can be very honest. And so I you see that throughout as well, where like they can be shoot them straight just as much as a type one and type eight on on either side of them. They have that ability, you just gotta get them to say it. And so always the little behind-the-scene interview. You always loved going, okay, what was Pam really thinking?
SPEAKER_12That's right, that's right. I think that these clips, I think, so accurate accurately represented Pam as a whole, but I think type nine is the first one of I hate thinking that people, I don't like people thinking that people hate me. I even don't like that Al-Qaeda hates me. So it's not only fear of conflict, it's even fear or discomfort with perceived conflict, even if I think there might be conflict there. And what's really helpful with understanding type nines, it's so interesting how eights tend to attract type nines. I used to do couples coaching as I was building my business, and I found a lot of type eight husbands married to type nine wives, and likewise just type eights married to type nines, because I think they're exactly what each other needs, and God is so intentional in that way.
SPEAKER_10Totally.
SPEAKER_12But if type nines fear perceived conflict and they start to perceive or associate you with conflict, they're gonna move away from you. And so it's the same thing in her marriage or her workplace, and Pam really represented that, and then that quick thought of, well, I'd like to see, like you said, the candy, and but really quick with the negativity oh, vending machines. So just wanting to matter, but at the same time, I'm married to a type nine as well. Absolute firecrackers if you if you push them too far. But she's saying, you know, she doesn't like to gamble, but she's gambling on the fact that I don't smack her. And so my wife, she's a nine with an eight-wing. And when she starts to get a bit aggressive, it's funny because when we first got married, I was all eight and she was all nine. And now it's like we flipped, like I access a little bit more of that nine-wing because I'm definitely eight-wing seven, but more of that nine-wing at home, and she accesses more of the eight. So I feel like she's being really mean to me and and angry, and it's just weird. But nines are not pushovers, they are they are leaders, they are honest, they're direct, they're consistent. And I really like seeing Pam represented uh well here and in type nines as well.
SPEAKER_10Absolutely. Peacemakers, not pushovers. So love it.
SPEAKER_12I had a friend say we are peacemakers, not peacekeepers. So don't push us.
SPEAKER_10Very important, very important. Yep, they're not just standing by letting chaos happen behind them. They're gonna do something about it. So awesome. Well, Canu, I think that we have this has been fun. I have loved getting to do this, and I'm gonna believe that our friends here today are just really glad they got a little chance to maybe walk down some memory lane here with the office, and maybe they'll be putting the box set on their Christmas list as well this year. Um, but before we go, I would love for people to continue the conversation with you. I'm sure they, as um maybe a leader in the workplace or maybe they're part of a team that you're going, we really could use the Enneagram with our my teammates and my office mates, my ministry leaders. So, how can they get a hold of you to get some help?
SPEAKER_12Yes. So you can visit truestrategy.info and connect with us there. I have a problem, Amy. And my problem is I am very, very relational. So when I serve a client, I don't want to let them go, but it's not viable for them to continue to hire me to stick around. I'm not for sale, so they can't hire me full time. And I don't like to have to continue to resell them things. Yeah. So I did some evaluation and realized that my best clients were people that hired me to develop their teams. And so what we've done is we've created true strategy is no longer a company, it's a place. And it's a place where we build your people so you can build your business. So whether you as a solopreneur or an entrepreneur or an executive leader, if you want a place for your people to be developed long term as leaders, like a bolt-on development solution, then we have a place for you. And we use the Enneagram in that, but we're also uh developing uh key characteristics or key skills in leaders like communication, boundaries, awareness, conflict resolution, delegation, things of that nature. So I've brought together a team of leaders with over 30 years of experience to serve you. And of course, if you want private workshops, then you can email me, Kianu at true strategy.info. I'd love to work with you. And also, Amy, Amy, I want we need coaches, need coaches, right? I am looking forward to bringing you in to serve my team. We all need outside perspective. It doesn't matter how professional we are, how much we know, or how much we're experts. I think Amy and I would both say we're experts in the Enneagram, but we need coaches. I have coaches. So, Amy, this has been awesome. And I really hope people engage with you and this platform. And thank you for bringing this together. It's like you threw a virtual party where people got to connect and love each other. Like, is that was that the goal? That's like a sevens dream.
SPEAKER_10My friends meeting my friends and then introducing my friends to other friends. It has been a blast. Yes, Keanu, thank you. And um, truly, sincerely, this has been brilliant. And uh, what you have going is really um it's just gonna make such great impact, not only for people's lives, but ultimately for the kingdom. So appreciate what you're doing.
SPEAKER_12Thank you, Amy. Thank you, everyone, for watching.
SPEAKER_10Now, I sure hope that you thought that was as fun as I did. And sometimes you just need to listen to an amusing podcast episode, right? Yes, there's a time and a place for focused learning, but if you're anything like me, a girl just needs a break. Sometimes a lively and entertaining episode is what self-care looks like for the day. And I am so excited to announce that Keanu is one of the speakers at the Wholehearted Summit this year again in September of 2022. Did you enjoy this conversation with him today? Did you resonate with his personality? Then I think you're gonna love sitting under his wisdom and wit this fall at the online summit. Again, all the details to sign up for this free event can be found in the show notes. Again, I'm giving you a sneak peek, remember. I can't wait to see you there. There's so much growing and learning within a summit, and I know that you're gonna be glad to attend. Your future self will thank you for signing up. Next week, I'm gonna be back with an episode all about how the Enneagram can provide insight to your pattern of stress and how this knowledge can change your life. There's so much to share with you, as always. I can't wait. So until next time, continue to pursue God's perspective, purpose, and plans for your wholehearted life.
