Um, and honestly, I'm glad that I still have been in the word in those seasons, even if my heart wasn't in it, because I mean, his word doesn't return void. That's what he tells us. So, I mean, I'm still getting it in me, even if my even if I was kind of half-hearted there.

She is an author, mama, and fellow Enneagram enthusiast, with her dominant type being a one. So far, we're kicking off the year strong with type ones. And since it's January, you've probably guessed that we're going to begin the whole hearted rhythm series like we have in years before. We focus on word, worship, right, and a new edition last year, wait. As the perfect candidate for this topic, Jessica will be helping us dive into the word this year. You are a new friend thanks to Instagram. There's been a few lately where I don't even know how I started following them, but their content keeps grabbing my attention. And I just like, I think I gotta get to know this person better. So I get to have them on the podcast and share them with my friends.

Tell me a little bit about your Enneagram journey, about your type and how you see that play out in your life as a mom and wife and just all the things and an author as well.

SPEAKER_01 5:02

Sure. Well, I first heard about the Enneagram several years ago when my husband and I um were in the first couple years of marriage, so that was kind of nice.

SPEAKER_02 5:10

Yes.

SPEAKER_01 5:11

Um, but it was right back when um The Road Back to You had come out and everybody was reading it. And we kind of went through the book with like a small group of ours from church, and we really enjoyed it. And but I remember feeling so exposed as I read the chapter about my type. And um I do identify as a one um with a wing two. And but I just couldn't believe how spot on it was. And learning about all the different ways that people see the world has just been helpful for me in understanding all that we have different perspectives. Um, for me, I'm very much in like a black or white, and so it's hard for me to understand other perspectives. Um, but reading through that and then just trying to get to know my husband, obviously, um, wanting to understand his perspective and how he sees the world, it's helped me to apply that in other situations as well. It's like, you know what, they're probably not coming to this situation the same way I am. Right. Yeah. And then it's also just helped inform the way I relate to the Lord. And it's really helped me to just understand like that there is a certain way that God's made me. And I don't have to make excuses for that, but I can also embrace it and then continually be sanctified through it. And it's helped with understanding a lot of how some of the behavior patterns like are rooted in lots of different experiences and just how I've responded to life in general.

So wow, that is beautifully said. I think for the one, this a strong aspect of their personality that is so helpful to know is that the one really does see the world in this, that whatever their way is, it's the right way. So it is harder, it's more challenging. I think for the one and the eight in particular to step in other people's shoes and go, oh, maybe they are coming at it just a different way, not the wrong way, as maybe your lens would have told you in the past.

Yes, for sure. Different is not wrong. But that's even saying that feels wrong.

I can't tell you how many friends who at different times who were ones texted me when that particular revelation would come about, going, You mean that everyone thinks the same way I do? Like, tell me about this. Oh man. Well, I'd be curious to know too, you having the benefit of knowing this um early on in your married years, how do you think it's impacted having the knowledge of it, not just your type, but in motherhood in general?

SPEAKER_01 7:43

So I think that for me, um, with well, I came to motherhood in kind of a non-traditional way. So we actually were foster parents before we be were biological parents. So knowing that you have children in your home that you did not give birth to makes a big difference. I mean, because you don't you you're not pouring everything into them from day one. That in itself is just has been a game changer because it's like, well, I don't know where this perspective is coming from because it didn't come from our home, you know? I think it's easier with biological children to assume, like, oh, well, I'm baking in all this good stuff, and so they're just gonna think the way I think. But I think coming to parenting uh through foster parenting originally um has allowed me to see that whether it's nature versus nurture, like everyone has different perspectives and they're all influenced in different ways. So I think that within motherhood, um, it's been a huge challenge for me um because of our unique circumstances, just to be able to see and know that my kids that did not come to me through biology are gonna have different perspectives. Um and I think that it has been definitely a tool that the Lord has used to sanctify me, because I have to learn to enter in with compassion and not that judgmental view of like, well, why can't you just think this way? Because there is that reformer in me, and I do have such a strong um conviction and desire for truth. And so if in my mind, if I see something and I think, well, that's because they're believing this, this, and this, that's not true, and I'm looking at it from the spiritual perspective where I'm like, well, that's a lie, and they shouldn't think that like that. I can get very caught up in wanting to fix, fix, fix instead of entering in in compassion and saying, like, okay, yes, maybe they're believing some wrong things, but think about why and try and address the why and the root instead of trying to fix, fix, fix and fixate on behaviors. Um, I think that's been a huge challenge for me and just learning how to address the heart and the felt needs of my kids, regardless of whether or not they're behaving the way I want them to.

You're doing an amazing job. I can already tell. That is gonna bear really good fruit. And I love your unique perspective of entering into this and very challenging role as it is through foster care. So thank you for your part of being the hands and feet of Jesus and also sharing that vulnerably because I know someone resonated with this and just understanding it in a new way. So uh beautifully said. Thank you.

Well, every year for the last, I think almost seven years now, we have begun the year and I've dubbed it this idea of three weeks to a new year. And it really stemmed from 21 days of fasting at the beginning of the year, that rhythm that I had done for for probably a couple of decades now, because of uh a church rhythm. And so I have learned to adapt that over the years because maybe I was pregnant, maybe I was nursing, fasting looked different, maybe fasting that I thought in my late teens, you know, looked like food. Fasting has evolved over the years. But ultimately, what I really loved was that rhythm gave me permission to wait to determine what the year ahead was going to look like until I had engaged in the rhythm of listening first, of this idea of getting in the word, starting the year with worship, and then also writing my way through it, whether it was coming up with the word for the year or journaling and all of those different things. So, really, it was about and setting the intention for the year ahead instead of the pressure to it's genuinely woman. I already know what the year is going to look like. Right. Whoever this does, it's you know, the end of the year is loaded with so many things. And so ultimately, I wanted to invite a community of people to step into a rhythm that was more graceful, that there was more room to actually establish what mattered. So one of those pieces, a foundational piece, is getting into the word on a regular basis, not just in those first three weeks, but what does it look like this year for you to make the word a priority? So I know you are a woman who loves God's word and are all about teaching it and preaching it and sharing it. So tell us a little bit about what you've learned about getting into the rhythm of the word, whether you're, you know, jumbling a couple of kids or in the glory days when you had all the time in the world.

Right. Yes. Well, I grew up in the church, so I've been pretty immersed in like the subculture of American Christianity my whole life. Um, but with that background and especially with my personality too, it's really easy for me to go through the motions of reading the Bible and other spiritual disciplines because I know that it's the right thing to do. Um, so there's definitely been seasons where I've read the Bible because I felt like I was supposed to, and you know, this is what you're supposed to do. And I don't want to disappoint the Lord. Um, and honestly, I'm glad that I still have been in the word in those seasons, even if my heart wasn't in it, because I mean, his word doesn't return void. That's what he tells us. So I mean, I'm still getting it in me, even if my even if I was kind of half-hearted there. Um, that's okay. But now I spend a lot of time in the word just because I genuinely crave it and need it. And um, I just I I that's how I get through the day. Yes, I am a morning person and I know not everybody is, but I I genuinely enjoy getting up really early in the morning before my kids. So, um, and also because I'm a writer and a Bible teacher, the best way to be able to share the truth is to know it. And so, I mean, I can't share, I can't share something that I don't know and then I haven't experienced myself. And so, um, and that's not to say that I'm reading it just to get some content. Like I genuinely want to teach from a place of experience and um from my personal walk with the Lord. So more often than not, I can be found in the morning with a cup of tea or my Bible and journal, just sitting with the Lord. Um and it's just, I mean, it's just central to my life. It's the only way I know how to navigate this world that we're living in. I mean, let alone, I mean, my life versus, you know, the whole world around us. Like it's it's pretty much the only way I know how to navigate everything.

Agreed. I am I have the same rhythm, and I know that some years it's been earlier than others or much later than others, but having that anchor at the beginning of the day, again, even if it was just one verse, because there's definitely stretches of three kids, three and under and breastfeeding and all of the deals that you know are are taking your attention and limiting your opportunity. But that has been a beautiful anchor. So from that, okay, I and I love that you separated that you go to the Lord and you go to the word just for you, just for nourishment for you. And I think that I speak to a lot of fellow authors and have a lot who listen to the podcast and those who want to be authors. So I think distinguishing that you go to get from him, receive from him for you alone as a beloved child is really important to separate that out from what you are doing in preaching and teaching the word. That being said, tell us a little bit about your book and what you are doing, what you are sharing and how you're helping equip women with the knowledge of the word of God and to get into that rhythm of diving into the word of God.

Yes. So over the last couple of years, my family just walked through some diff, a lot of difficulties. It was just kind of like one after another after another after another, just like it were felt like we were in the ring, and then we would like get up and then get knocked back out again. Yes. Totally. Um, and I found that there were so many different things that were changing and things that I thought were certain were no longer certain, and just lots of upheaval in transmission and grief and loss and sorrow. And the word, Jesus himself, um, because we know he's the word-made flesh, he was the only constant. And so Romans 8 had been a passage that had just been encouraging to me, honestly, throughout the last several years. I mentioned that we entered into foster care um before having biological kids, and we actually um entered into foster care in the midst of an infertility journey, and we didn't do it because we were like, oh, let's have some kids. That's this'll be the way that we can have some kids in our house. Like that was not, it wasn't because of, um, but the Lord ended up using infertility to draw us to foster care sooner than we would have thought that we would have um, because we had originally thought that we might adopt. So in the midst of that in um infertility journey, um, Romans 8 was a passage. I've always loved the book of Romans, but Romans 8 was a passage that I kept coming back to, and I would just find myself like crying and weeping. And the Lord was just using it to show me that, you know, just those basics, kind of coming back to the basics of like we're saved by faith, and that it's not about what I can do. And so as I was reading it, I was just receiving from the Lord understanding more and more about my position in Christ. Um that's something that He's been teaching me over the last several years, and then I feel like I'm gonna continually learn um as I grow, but just understanding that I wasn't going to be able to do anything to have a baby. And praise the Lord, we do have biological kids right now, but in that season, I was just constantly trying to look to the next thing that could help me to get tired. You know, it was that question of like, oh, well, what if I take this supplement or what if I pray this prayer or what if I confess this thing? I mean, whatever. It was like grassroots cross. And so Romans 8 was a passage that I kept coming back to. And so then over the next few years, in the midst of pretty much any difficulty, it was something that I would just constantly feel drawn to. Um, because I think that um, especially in the American church, it's very easy for us to think that suffering is a punishment and that there's something that we've done that has invited that. And so then we want to think, well, how can I fix it so I can get out of this horrible situation? Because if it was my fault, then I can probably fix it and make it better so that I don't have to be in this difficulty anymore. So in the midst of over the last couple of years going through walking through some some really deep, dark valleys, um, I kept on coming back to Romans 8 again. And the Lord just kept showing me like the hope that we have through him and understanding and seeing that I was not going to be able to fix all of the different broken circumstances in my life, but I could fix my eyes on him. Um, and that his Holy Spirit truly can give the peace that passes all understanding. In the middle of that, um, I started writing. I was like, I want to write a devotional that walks through this passage so that women can see that we can overwhelmingly conquer, that we really can be victorious, even when we feel like we've been knocked down and beaten down. Kind of started writing it in the middle of that. I was pregnant with our second child, and so put it down for a little bit.

Yes, I bet you did.

SPEAKER_01 19:09

There was a lot going on. Yeah. We moved, we had had a death in the family. It just needed to sit for a minute. Yeah. But then I felt like I had the green light again. I was like, okay, I need to pick this up. I've got to finish this, I've got to get this out into the world. So I picked it up and then finished it. But yeah, it just walks through verse by verse that passage, taking a look at it and looking at the truth of what God says, that suffering is not something that we invite upon ourselves necessarily. It can be, of course, consequences, but it's not always sometimes, and most of the time, you know, it says that Paul says that he wants to know Christ in his suffering. And it says, patients, that we know him through his suffering and so or our suffering. So it's pretty much a requirement. Unfortunately, yes. It's not a being human, but it's also a requirement, pretty much, if you're going to truly follow Jesus and not just kind of check the box of going to church. Um, so yeah, I have come to see um that suffering is his a great tool for him. And he wants to use it to bring us closer to him. He doesn't want it to draw us away from him. He wants us to be able to see his face and see his beauty and his grace and his mercy as a result.

So it's so powerful to know the story behind the work because that credentials and gives the framework. It's really easy for us to maybe even go through our 20s, maybe even for our way through our 30s without experiencing some of the trial loss. And I've found that into my 40s, we're just it's fraught with it. And I've sometimes wondered, I've wondered, you know, not only the last three years globally, but as we get older, you can't help but go, oh, when I was younger and I thought it forward and dreamt about being at this stage, I thought it would look like this. And we get here, and yes, there is goodness and there is some of the beauty of the dream fulfilled, but it's coupled with pain and suffering and loss and heartache of some of the good things that we knew 20 years ago. Right. So, so it is both Ian and I I would testify as well. My my community has heard again and again. There's been a lot of pain and suffering, and I've been as open as I can, but it's not all of just my story. But at the end of the day, I can say grief and loss are heavy and true and real, but God is good and he is better. And I can testify to knowing him better because of the suffering. And dang it, I wish it wasn't so. But that is that is a difference. It's only and I know it makes us powerful, teachers and carriers of the gospel, because we've really worn it. It's not just this thing we know we've grappled with a little bit, we've wrestled it to the nitty-gritty of going through the process of I'm going to leave him because it's not supposed to be this way. To, oh, I can't forsake him because I can't do anything without him. So that's powerful. Well, I'm excited to dive into the work myself and just see it. I don't, I think I'm gonna go and read Romans 8 after this and read it through a new lens. So and just thank you. Thank you for even allowing the work to marinate, if you will. I think that pause probably has made it even more powerful, even though it's something frustrating.

Yeah, I was like, oh, it's so annoying that I'm it's just sitting there. But then I I when I came back to it, I was like, oh, I have a different perspective now.

SPEAKER_02 22:43

So yes, yes, for sure. And that's so interesting. There's been a work on my heart that I started in 2018. And oh man, there is so much more that I'm gonna add to it and change it in such a different framework. Yeah. Well, as we're going through this idea of the wholehearted rhythms, I've been asking all the guests to kind of share little bits and pieces about their unique, I don't know, bent or rhythm for the year ahead. So for you, is there a new habit or rhythm that you're stepping into in this new year that you're going to try out?

SPEAKER_01 23:19

Yeah. So I actually, this is kind of more internal, um, but I I I've kind of started doing it now and I'd like to continue. But I'm trying to just be more gentle with myself and trying to talk to myself like I would a friend. Um that first verse in Romans 8 where it says there's no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. As a one, it is very easy for me to be very condemning to myself and just be like, Oh, why did you do this better? Why you do that? You know, that inner voice constantly. Yes. Um, but I the Lord has just been helping me to see, like, okay, it's one thing to identify that that's not him, but it's another thing to actually work against it and and fight for myself and fight for the truth. Um, and so part of that, I mean, and part of that is of course, you know, quoting scripture and things like that. But also um, a friend of mine, and she's um a therapist, she's incredible. She talks about the importance of having a relationship with yourself. And to me, kind of I'm like, oh, that sounds kind of woo-woo. But like I'm beginning to see that that's actually really important. Like, if it says love your neighbor as yourself, like how if you don't know yourself and you can't lead yourself, like how are you gonna lead others or love others? And so I'm beginning to see the importance of like, okay, if I were talking to a friend, like for instance, like I snap at my three-year-old or something. Like, if I were talking to a friend, I would not tell her, like, you are a sucky mom. Like, I would never say that. Like, if she were like, oh my gosh, I lost it with my three-year-old, I wouldn't be like, oh, well, you suck. But in my mind, I'm like, oh, you suck. Yes, yes. I'm never gonna say that to a friend. And so I'm trying to, like, in the in the moment or right after, you know, maybe it's a couple hours later, but at least I'm trying, you know, at least it's there just to say, like, okay, hold on. Let's like remove, like, let's step back from the moment and look at it and say, okay, yeah, like you snapped and it was not you, it was ugly, but you, the Lord has grace for you, and you can apologize and you can repair and you can try again the next time because there's always new mercies. And so, yeah, I'm trying to be more gentle with myself, talk to myself like I would have friend.

That's a great rhythm. I think all the Enneagram ones listening are going, Yes, I think I will try that. Try it out.

It seems silly, I mean so frequently, like to say, like, hey, that is you know, but you and it feels a little crazy, but then I have noticed that like it calms me down, and I'm like, okay, hold on. Whose voice am I listening to here?

SPEAKER_02 25:51

So it's a new spin on talking back to the inner critic. Girl, so you don't get the final second. Get out of here. That's right. Okay, for you, is there a worship song or album that you've had on repeat lately, or that you I don't know, that you could whenever you need to step into that worshipful rhythm that you turn on.

SPEAKER_01 26:12

Um, so I really love Hope Darst. Really, really love her. Um I don't think I've heard her. She's good. I think you probably have heard her on the radio. Um, she does that piece, be still. Um but a friend of mine during one of our darker seasons sent me one of her songs that wasn't like a radio song, you know, it was like from the album that you'd have to listen to. And so I've just I I love her voice and just love very scripturally based. Um, so I've really been encouraged by her music lately.

Oh, another thing I'm gonna look up after this. I can't wait.

So good. So game. Yeah.

Okay. I know that again, we really emphasize here waiting, giving yourself time to marinate in the word and worship and writing through things before you feel like you have to claim that word or scripture for the year. So I'm just kind of curious, where are you at with that frame of reference for 2023 or what the Lord's been maybe highlighting or speaking to you?

SPEAKER_01 27:07

Yeah, so one thing that I've been thinking about um is the scripture, unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it build it labor in vain. That's Psalm 127. And I think that for me, I can be such a dreamer and have all this vision of all the different things that I want to do. Um, but I can kind of run ahead or just like say, like, oh, well, this is what I'm gonna do. So bless it, Lord. And I want to just ensure that I whatever I'm building, it's not about me. It's it's it's for him. So I really want to come back, keep coming back to that with all of the different things that I am endeavoring to do. If endeavoring is a verb.

SPEAKER_02 27:49

Yes, I think it is beautiful framework, so applicable, even in the context of those who build, you know, building a house or building out your year, um, submitting it to the Lord. Mia, Jessica, you have been full of wisdom and insight. I'm just curious as we finish this conversation, is there one more thing that comes to mind that you'd really love to share? Or maybe you have a couple of steps about uh those who are looking to begin that rhythm, maybe they've just not ever really found their groove, or maybe this is just new. Getting into the word is a new thought for them.

SPEAKER_01 28:25

Right. Well, I think that we sometimes can get overwhelmed in thinking that we have to consume so much of the Bible to be able to be a good Christian or be able to understand it. But the word is so rich. And I um just in research over the last couple of months, I was doing a speaking engagement and I found a verse, and I didn't understand one of the words in it. So it led me to a Google search, and then I looked it up on Google, and then I found all these different things, and I was like crying reading it, and that was one verse. And so I think that understanding, and I'm talking to myself too, that it's okay to take small steps. Um a mentor friend of mine sent me a video where Priscilla Shire was talking about the days with young kids, and she was saying, you know, she would write a verse on a post-it note and put it in lots of different places so that she was just seeing it in different places in the laundry room, in her in her office or in the playroom. And, you know, meditating on one verse is not a bad thing. Like, um, it's easy for us to want to consume and say, like, I read the whole Bible this year, but maybe he just wants you to camp out in one book and really get to know that one book. Um, and that's nothing to be ashamed of because you're still in the word. Yes. I mean, something is better than nothing. Um, so and that's not to say that we shouldn't be intentional by carving out time, but there's also grace when things are just crazy, or like you said, you're breastfeeding, or just all the all the things. Just get it in you somehow.

That's right. It's so good. Case in point, your book is just chapter eight of Romans. There's a whole load of other chapters in Romans. You could have been the book of Romans, and that's not not that's not to knock it, but I wholeheartedly agree. There has been seasons where BSF served me really well, or a Bible study through a whole book was really good. But also just taking one song for a long period of time served me really, really well. Really digesting it. And I like how you equate it to it's a rich meal. We wouldn't want anyone to just scarf down the Thanksgiving meal, though. We do. We could draw it out and savor it a little bit more. Speaking to someone myself who does not savor well. So I think that's wonderful advice and fabulous wisdom. Get it up there, get it, you know, just in the different places. Really, the the idea is to be meditating and feasting with him all day long throughout the day. So yeah.

And I would say one of my things that I do is I just have worship music playing like constantly. Um, and that just keeps pointing me back to him, you know. So if you have that, those a verse that you're meditating on, but you're like, oh gosh, I still wish I had more time and I wish I could do this and you know, well, just turn on some music and sing it. And sing it back then and allow yourself to keep on singing those things until you actually believe that they're true.

Yes. Yes, and amen. Jessica, this has been a wonderful gift to get to meet you. I'm so glad to share part of your story, part of who you are. I have no doubt my friends are gonna want to check out your book and follow you and keep up with what is happening in your family and your world and the wisdom that you have to share.
